24 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico register, certify or license interior designers.

Our State Board of Certified Interior Designers provides certification and regulation under the provisions of Business Occupations and Professions Article, Annotated Code of Maryland, Title 8 and the Code of Maryland Regulations 09.18. Certification in Maryland is a “Title” Act.

Only a certificate holder may use the title “Certified Interior Designer “or “CID”, sign and seal plans, specifications, drawings, reports, or any other interior design documents that are required to be signed and sealed under Business Occupations and Professions Article, §8-403, Annotated Code of Maryland.

Since supported by AIA Maryland,  “SB364/HB544: Real Property - Mechanic’s Lien - Certified Interior Design Services” was passed in 2009. The bill authorizes the establishment of a mechanic’s lien for interior design services that pertain to interior construction provided by a certified interior designer.

Pursuant to Maryland law, each board or commission is subject to 'sunset review" periodically.  During the 2003 Session of the Maryland General Assembly, it was determined to continue the law governing the Title act for certification of interior designers until 2014, when it will once again be subject to sunset review. There is current legislative effort to create permanent interior designer licensing in Maryland.
